Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX589W 5.1-Channel Theater System (Black) Review

1

Large update of the house-In-A-Box Systems for 2009 is a built-in Blu-Ray player. If you do not want to spend that much – and you are not ready for Blu-Ray – there are many home theater systems with a “just” DVD. Sony has three such models, each of which sports five-disc DVD-changer and have the same functionality, but complete with speakers or various accessories.

CAA HDX589W, which we consider here, comes with S-AIR wireless rear kit Assembly. Identical price DAV-HDX587WC includes average listening station (also on the basis of the Sony S-Air Technology), for listening to the system in another room. The entry-level DAV-HDX285 ($ 300) does not fall Out On The interior acoustic systems and wireless accessories, but with the possibility of expansion up to any additional features when purchasing these items separately. All HTIBs in the series includes a dock for use with Ipods with dock connection (fourth generation and above).

Design
CAA HDX589W is a 5.1-channel system, which includes two “cabinet” of left and right front speakers, center channel, as well as left and right satellite speakers. All the speakers are made of molded plastic with a fatal bars. Front rest tallboys on adjustable positions, which require some assembly out of the box. Each speaker can be wall-mounted as well.

Ahead, in the center channel a bit cumbersome, perhaps, in addition to the flank tallboys on both sides. Speakers are small, only going about 3 inches deep.

All satellites, along with a subwoofer, use proprietary communication wires that are color-coded for easy installation. Subwoofer and 6-inch driver nor food, nor they have and volume control.

The receiver is slightly thinner compared to the devices we’ve seen in the series in past years. The LCD screen is above a set of shortcut buttons that correspond to all five discs, as well as some basic functions of the playback controls. Equipped with a slick, black finish, this unit should have no problem blending in with the most modern electronics.

Included remote management can be overwhelming at times. This is a little cluttered, and some buttons are too many teams assigned to them. We do not like how it felt in our hands, and we would regain control just take some time getting used to.

Setting
Before you install automatic calibration, DAV-sound HDX589W is acceptable, but the subwoofer was too loud for our taste. However, if you are a fan of a lot of bass, you can be happy with the sound and give up automatic or manual setup your speakers.

The manual settings are rather simple to do, but after we had completed its balance between the satellites and the subwoofer was far from ideal. Subwoofer was a big, boomy sound, and satellites gave us very little bass on their own. In other words, most of the bass came from the subwoofer, way over on the right side of our room listening.

Next, we set DCAC (Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) automatic speaker calibration system through their steps. DCAC adjusts the volume level for each speaker and subwoofer and measures the distance between each speaker.

Digital Cinema Auto Calibration is simple. Connect the supplied microphone, and A. CAL menu navigation display screen to initiate AutoSetup program. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes, and all measurements are made from only one microphone position.

After AutoSetup, the subwoofer was raised again, which was too loud for us. It would be nice if Sony included a subwoofer volume control on the remote control, like many other HTIBs do, such as the Samsung HT-AS730. This makes life much easier in the transition from the disk.

DAV-HDX589W lacks bass and treble, so it does not give many opportunities to adjust tonal balance. One “tone” Control, click “Dynamic Bass” on the remote, enhances the bass. But because the DAV-HDX589W has a lot that we never really need to use this feature.

Features
In addition to DVDs and audio CDs, CAA HDX589W can play MP3 and JPEG photo files with a recordable CD or DVD. Unit can also play an increasingly rare format SACD. The five-disc changer is surprisingly fast, despite the noise in disc replacement on the borders distract.

CAA HDX589W offers three options for connecting the system to your TV. There are ports for composite, component and HDMI connections, but only you can control the output resolution setting when using HDMI. CAA HDX589W can output video to DVD 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p.

You can not bring your own video source in the CAA HDX589W – only the third-party source of sound. There room for an analog RCA connection, or if you are looking to add a digital source, there are optical and coaxial inputs are available. The front panel also offers audio jack for connecting devices that accommodate 3.5-mm line input.

CAA HDX589W system is equipped with “on Sony S-Air Technology”, which powers their wireless rear speakers. We reiterate again and again what a mistake “wireless” claim may be, and with the CAA HDX589W is no difference. The only wireless audio is sent from a transmitter to the receiver to receiver rear speaker. The system uses a pair of S-AIR cartridges that are inserted into both the receiver and surround speaker of the receiver.
